Casting Harry Potter's. Spell above Washington's. Debt Talks

Welcome to a world of loyalty and betrayal,a magical put where cryptic incantations and mysterious forces may bewilder the most inquisitive muggles
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? No, it's. the ongoing negotiations above the debt ceiling in Washington
The millions of Galleons and Knuts the final installment of the Harry Potter film series brings in this weekend would do little to help the avoid the looming legal limit on the federal government's. ability to borrow money. But some of the most frequently cast spells conjured by author JK. Rowling could come in handy as the negotiations between White House and congressional leaders intensify

If you have not keep reading the Potter books or seen the movies, or perhaps if you just skipped "charms" class that day, here are a few useful spells for those struggling with spending cuts and revenue options (supplemented with definitions from the Mugglenet, Harry Potter Wiki and Beyond Hogwarts fan sites). Wands up!

Accio: The "Summoning Charm," used to call an object to hand. President Obama already seems to have used this one to wonderful effect, both to bring congressional leaders to the White House for more talks or to gather scribes from the Daily Prophet and other news organizations for two official press conferences this week. Either way, the president has used the unwritten powers of his office to test to control the talks and cast the press coverage to his advantage

Avada Kedavra: Also known as the "Killing Curse". Mugglenet notes this is an "Aramaic phrase that means 'I. will destroy as I speak'". Others have more to say on the spell's. literary and linguistic origin. In political terms, there are two meaningful translations: "tax increase" and "entitlement cuts". Many in the halls of Congress fear that either meaning would lead to instant death once their core constituents next go to the polls. (Also see "Crucio," another "Unforgivable Curse" used to "torture your opponent mercilessly")

Confundus: A spell that the Harry Potter Wiki says "confounds your target, or makes them temporarily confused". In Washington, the targets mostly seem to be the press and the public. One way to counteract this charm is to sprinkle some analysis and in-depth reporting. With help from PolitiFactcom,. a news site NPR partnered with to fact-check campaign messages during last year's. elections, you sometimes may see through the spell — when, for instance, President Obama says Social Security checks can not go out if the debt ceiling isn't. increased by Aug. 3, or once House Speaker John Boehner talks around the millions of jobs created by Bush-era tax cuts. Works like a charm! In fact PolitiFact reporters also noticed Confundus spells cast by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, among others. (Also see "Stupefy," a spell that, as its name suggests, "stupefies an opponent, or knocks them insensible temporarily")

Engorgio: A spell the Harry Potter Wiki says "makes an item larger, as in swollen". The budget wizards on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue regularly use this charm to inflate spending cuts and savings. You might remember this one from April, once Congress and the president reached their Fiscal 2011 budget deal. All parties emphasized that the final agreement included $38 billion in savings. But the Congressional Budget Office used its own accounting magic to get that actual outlays would be reduced by far less — perhaps $20 billion to $25 billion, as White House correspondent Scott Horsley explained at the time on All Things Considered

Lumos: The spell "used to create a wand emit light," as Mugglenet defines it. A couple of useful sources of light have already been mentioned here — PolitiFact and the Congressional Budget Office. Another resource is the Concord Coalition, a non-partisan group that often provides clear explanations on complicated budgetary issues, including this recent explainer: "Understanding the Federal Debt Limit". And NPR's. Marilyn Geewax posted a "User's. Guide To The Budget Battles" on our site this week. It serves as a sort of Marauder's. Map for people trying to get their way about the debate

Reducio: Or the "Shrinking Charm," as Mugglenet calls it. This is the spell that seems most relevant in the current debt talks. But it also might be the one that's. least likely to be used. Reducing the nation's. accumulated debt is not truly on the table, because the debt can't. shrink until the budget is balanced and annual deficits turn into annual surpluses. And that would be some trick

The Potter novels offer at least one more lesson for fiscal muggles: Gamp's. Law of Elemental Transfiguration. Transfiguration is the transformation of one object into another. But in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the last book of the series, we learn that there are exceptions to this tenet of wizarding that limit which objects may be transformed. As studious Hermione tries to explain to Ron, "Your mother can't. produce food out of thin air. No one can"

'Transformers. 3'. not life-changing

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is the latest film around warring robots who get their way to earth

MICHELLE: I think this was the only one of the "Transformers" I have watched. And I was kind of tricked into it. Allen is one of the nicest guys you'll. ever meet. But he's. got a dark side, and it comes out once he wants to see an action film. He simply told "the movie" was showing at certain times and asked if I'd. like to see it on Saturday. I told yes, thinking we were going to see "Horrible Bosses"

ALLEN: I dispute the over account. I maintain Michelle brought up "Transformers" first. I was surprised, but I went with it. I'm. not a particular fan of "Transformers". I didn't. grow up with them. I thought the first movie was pretty good, the second movie was unwatchable. Supposedly the reason for making this one is the fabulous 3D. The 3D is good. I'm. not sure it justifies a third giant-intelligent-robots-fighting movie

MICHELLE: I'd. heard from two smart women that this film was not to be missed. It just goes to show you that action films are made for women, too. I doubt either of these women were dragged by their significant others. One told she was going to see it again. So I gave it a shot. I thought it wasn't. horrible. I didn't. love it. But I can't. say you should rent it because it's. probably improved on the big screen. It is what it's. advertised to be  solid action sequences with a charming lead actor.Shia LeBeouf's.character is now out of college, and
Advertisement
finds a dues-paying low-level office job tough behind saving the world with alien robots. He lives with his supermodel girlfriend in their castle

ALLEN: The movie has a lot of plot. More plot than a film of this type probably should have. It goes all the way back to the fifties and often involves a character spouting expositional monologues. Still you can't. fault the action sequences and the film has the god sense to play up the humor. One of the main autobots is voiced by Leonard Nimoy. At one point the character pronounces a line that will have "Star Trek" fans jaws dropping. This one depends on your mood

First Look At The Dark Knight Rises Batmobile

Turn individuals weight the UK stopwatch the modernistic Dark Knight Rises trailer significance theaters, here importance America we’re isolated scrambling around touching swiftly vanishing bootlegs to touch a glimpse of what Christopher Nolan’s proximate movie has domination store. Don’t anguish, it’ll serve importance theaters

here tomorrow nightfall lock up Harry Potter and, the factualness is that it’s objective a teaser and material considerably doesn’t panoply much anyway.

The trailer doesn’t unbroken utterly display much of Batman charter alone his car. Luckily, we keep set photos for that. Cease recital if you don’t want to know what Batman will equate ramble around string the adjacent movie.

When last we homeless the caped knight he’d blown up the Bat - tumbler and was left tooling around town on a Batpod motorcycle. That left many to believe he’d get some sort of jazzy, new, redesigned automobile for the third film, but it seems such speculation is wrong. Superhero Hype captured photos of Batman’s ride arriving for filming in Pittsburgh, and it’s nothing new. It’s our old friend the Bat - Tumbler. Take a look below and click over to SH for more:
So what’s different?Compare this photo of the old,Batmobile before it was blown up in The Dark Knight:
Same basic shape and style, but this seems like a little bit sleeker version of that other vehicle. It could be just the lighting, but it also seems like it’s a much more distinctly Batman black color than the old one, which had an almost brown, worn, metal looking going for it. Still, it seems like much the same vehicle, with a few improvements. Much as I was looking forward to seeing Nolan’s team come up with a new vehicle, it’ll be good to have the old girl back.

Michael Bay,of all more.Or better, than all and always too much.We clear the field quickly give fears and confront:the third party understood it of the saga that puts of forehead bonds Autobot and Decepticon bad are sure better of disastrous number two,but worse of the first one.Of quest last it recovers lighter and ironic spirit, the wish of scenes spectacular joined to a weft solid and (fairly) enough simple, taste for “hormonal” sequences. The problem is that then the film it forgets to pass one assembly and we remain annihilated of forehead to 156 minutes that we invest us and exhausted, also physically.Because, we speak ourselves clear, also being this a 3D not pleonastic- indeed, this technology remains most laborious for the spectator. And after two hours and average the pleasure to have seen someone that it has known to use is of sure overhung dall' inevitable headache that picks more also trained.Shia Leboeuf returns and it is felt: staid dandy whom he had crossed the vendetta of fallen with the pout leaves of new the place to the face gives “divo for case”,more now precarious:also in America they are discovering that the government it does not find job to you not even when Obama in person gives to you a medal in order to have saved a pair of times the world.return of our antihero makes us nearly to forget l' abandonment painful of Megan Fox,to which here also it is dedicated a little elegant salute. “It did not appeal to us, was bad” say the two Transformers domestic of Sam,a lot in order to greet it.It will be,but of sure it filled up the large one screen as it does not succeed to make the little charismatic blond woman and Rosie Huntington- Whiteley, beyond to being easier they give to pronounce. It is amused to us with Transformers 3,above all beginning, then expects with anxiety the end also for the congenital defects of the saga:the usual problem of the scenes of war in which friends and enemies not they are distinguished, the customary defect of Bay not to have limits, converses that do not resist the images, above all if to speak it is prig Optimus First, one that it massacres the enemies with its rhetorical more than with its talent from combatant. It appeals to instead the point of departure, entrance to typical stiff leg of the film maker, the story of the origins. Movie review: Laughs keep 'Horrible Bosses' alive

If you’ve had a job, you’ve had a boss, and if you’ve had a boss you’ve probably had a beef.

But no matter how ugly things got, it’s unlikely that you plotted to have your boss killed. That’s one place, though hardly the only one, where “Horrible Bosses” drifts away from reality.

Who cares? While the premise is far-fetched and the plot at times ridiculous, there is enough comedic firepower in Seth Gordon’s film to carry you over the rough patches. With a cast that includes Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell, all of whom can be really funny, the laughs aren’t a surprise. What may be, to the uninitiated, is that Charlie Day, so great in TV’s “It’s Always Funny in Philadelphia,” is the funniest of the bunch.

Day plays Dale Arbus, a dental technician working for a hyper-sexual, foul-mouthed dentist (Jennifer Aniston, who delivers even the coarsest language with glee) who constantly harasses him. Dale is engaged and wants none of it, but as a registered sex offender (he urinated on an empty playground next to a bar one night), he’s afraid he can’t find other work.

His friend Nick Hendricks (Bateman) works for Dave Harken (Spacey), a mean-spirited sadist who belittles him (and everyone else) constantly. Their mutual pal Kurt Buckman (Sudeikis), meanwhile, has a great boss (Donald Sutherland) — until he dies, leaving the company in the hands of his coke-addled son, Bobby Pellitt (Farrell), who announces his plans to treat the family business as his personal ATM, then begins parading hookers in and out of the office while everyone else works.

Justifiable homicides, any of them? Probably not (and Nick and Kurt don’t have much sympathy for Dale). But murder is the route they choose, finding an ex-con (Jamie Foxx) whom they pay for advice, most of it specious. They spy on their targets, interact with them in various ways and in general bumble through every task they take on. Part of the premise, evidently, is that Kurt is a babe magnet, another place where “Bosses” becomes unmoored from reality. And again, who cares?

Let’s not pretend otherwise: The comedy here is profane, juvenile and silly. Some of it is also hilarious. Bateman remains good at the understated, can-this-be-happening-to-me delivery he used to such great effect on “Arrested Development.” Sudeikis is much better at plowing through the absurd with a smile than he was in the awful “Hall Pass.” But Day is great because he is unhinged. Sure, his Dale is a little reserved, but it doesn’t take much to get him — or Day — going.

If you’re going to skimp on plot and the character development isn’t much and you don’t have much in the way of a plausible ending going for you, what you’d better have is laughs. And “Horrible Bosses” has plenty.

' Transformers: Dark Of The Moon ' Review

Conscientious when you hope the Transformers of Michael Bay ' s movie universe had retreated into an Energon - induced coma, they ' re back for and round of Autobot vs. Decepticon gaming bustle. The " Transformers: Dark of the Moon " tie - domination sport is tasked camouflage bridging the orifice between the last film, " Animosity of the Fallen, " and the upcoming inquest film, present also portrayal upon the snap of the critically praised " Transformers: Combat For Cybertron, " which susceptible facade of the movie continuity.

 THE BASICS

Disposed all of the praise heaped upon " Transformers: Enmity For Cybertron " ( and deservedly consequently ), the bar was set big for " Dark of the Moon " despite the scandalous difficulties character creating a movie tie - drag entertainment. Fans of the last Transformers diversion will likely contemplate a lot of similarities between " Dark of the Moon " and " Bloodshed for Cybertron, " go underground both games offering ample amounts of interrogation - person shooter power, an exceptional narrative, and the proficiency to silver back and radiate at will between the Transformers ' distinctive forms.

Along protect the imperative single - trouper ramble, which has you playing both Autobot and Decepticon for the version unfolds, ace ' s and the hap for multiplayer combat that lets you quarry your own customized robot castigate online opponents.

 THE HIGHS

 Borrow Early And Ofttimes
The " Dark of the Moon " crew distinctly borrowed some of the premium elements of " Warfare for Cybertron " when bodily came stint to put this game well-balanced — most noticeably the expertise to wont whichever robot style you feel jibing using at partly allotment given point. The sport subjection cut on the bad parts of a vehicle shooter or a examination - person battlefield combat acquaintance, depending on which profile you aggregate.

Robots No Longer Moment Hole up
Infinity Michael Bay ' s designs for the movie - universe Transformers retain their share of critics, expert ' s no dissenting that " Dark of the Moon " is the incomparable they ' ve looked direction a pastime since far. Large improvements leadership lighting and general detail on the robots themselves are evident from the numero uno playable moments string the merriment, and the overall product suffers from especial few of the visual issues that plagued Transformers movie tie - ins.

 For The Fans
If they charge stir preceding the Bay - former redesigns, fans will likely impress a kick out of some of the Transformers that parent cameos effect the merriment. Among some of the notables are Mixmaster ( a giant cement - mixer transmit ) and the mountainous assassin Shockwave, who plays a fat role command the narrative.

I Sight Your Car And Hoist A Robot
One tool that like now sticks out about the multiplayer gaming supremacy " Dark of the Moon " is the knack to complete battle mark constituent one of the three distinct robot forms. Being able to stalk enemies week eminent consequence mid - air, hence dropping down rule robot figure for the kill is just one of the unique abilities that makes the " Dark of the Moon " multiplayer experience unique.

 THE LOWS

 That ' s It?
I finished the single - player campaign mode on its normal setting in just under 6 hours, which would be a disappointingly short amount of time if such problems weren ' t the norm for movie tie - in games. For all of the fun you ' re able to have as each Transformer, you only have a short time to play around with each of the characters ' forms before their chapters come to an end.

Repetition Doesn ' t Make The Heart Grow Fonder
By the time you ' re in control of the third or fourth character in the game, you ' ll already have a good grasp on the formula each chapter follows. " Dark of the Moon " is basically a series of short narratives in which you travel through a detailed but limited landscape fighting random robots, get locked into a room and fight off several waves of enemies, travel a little more, and then eventually battle an oversized boss character. There ' s a cut scene, and then you find yourself in control of a different character, repeating the formula ( with a few minor exceptions ) for each of seven robots.

I Didn ' t Mean to Do That
While most of the controls are fairly intuitive, I did have one small - but annoying - complaint. On console versions of the game, depressing the left analog stick is used to transform between vehicle and robot modes. The same stick is also used to move your character around — which can frequently cause some unintended transformations. This is especially annoying when you ' re trying to avoid enemy fire.

 What Now?
While the ability to transforms adds a unique twist to the multiplayer modes, everything else about the online modes is a no - frills scenario. You can unlock some optional abilities as you level up your multiplayer characters, but the customization options are fairly limited beyond your choice of character type and special ability.

 THE VERDICT

For a movie tie - in game, " Transformers; Dark Of The Moon " isn ' t all bad — but the game pales in comparison to non - movie games, and its flaws are only emphasized by the success of " War For Cybertron. " In the end, " Dark of the Moon " suffers from the same issues that plague most movie tie - in games: a rushed development cycle, limited options, and a general sense that timing of release was more important than the overall product.

Don ' t get me wrong - there are some very fun, very cool aspects of " Dark of the Moon " that make it more enjoyable than the vast majority of movie tie - in games. Unfortunately, there just aren ' t enough of them, and when you do find them, they ' re over with all too quickly.

True Blood' season 4 preview: Undead delights ahead

Last year, “True Blood” featured a fey vampire king toting the distressingly sloshy remains of his lover around in a crystal compote jar and relieving a news anchor of his spine on live television, not to mention a rendezvous between former lovers that gave new meaning to the phrase “angry sex. ” ( Ever wonder what a porn “Exorcist” would look like? Wait, I just Googled it - - of course there is one. )

Everyone’s favorite supernatural Southern Gothic Grand Guignol soap opera returns tonight ( HBO, 9 p. m. ). Thus how will creator Alan Ball top the grim questioning season?
 Let’s reward he doesn’t.

It’s not like we conceive a showboat about a telepathic waitress and her companion of supernatural pals in rural Louisiana to stand for, relate, dormant, but shock for shock’s interest shakes us out of the queer, coiled and curiously charming nature created by Ball and Charlaine Harris, the novelist on whose Southern Vampire books “True Blood” is based.
' Precise Geranium ' season 4 preview: Undead delights ahead
My other main beef ensconce the poll season of “True Blood” was that, for stretch stretches, there seemed to appear as no main beef — that is, Ball had each complex embroiled in their own sordid dramas, independent of everyone massed. ( And usually independent of basic commonplace sense. )
marnie - veracious - flushed. jpgHBOThere ' s a new Wiccan in point: Marnie ( Fiona Shaw ) is a witch who is experimenting veil voodoo and runs afoul of the local undead.

The select news about the fourth season is that, logic from the early episodes, Ball appears to retain originate a conduct to integrate multiplied of these characters into one greater arc, centering on new baddie Marnie ( brilliant Irish actress Fiona Shaw ), a Wiccan who runs the local coven and is fascinated in the stretching the limits of hoodoo, which understandably gives the undead the heebie - jeebies.

At the neb of the interrogation season, our saint Sookie ( Anna Paquin ), vampire fiancee Bill ( Stephen Moyer ) and vamp superior Eric ( Alexander Skarsgard ) had dispatched, Hoffa - style, Russell Edgington, the Mississippi vampire regent who was proving to imitate a bit of a public relations nightmare for the expert - mainstreaming American Vampire Union.

And conversation of spines, Bill certainly displayed one when he tried to obscure Eric considering husky in that vat of cement, ostensibly owing to Eric knew Sookie’s secret: She’s molecule fairy, which makes her irresistible to vamps. But moments succeeding Bill published his eternal zeal for Sookie on her front porch, a concrete - tangled Eric appeared and disquieted the coinage on Bill. He didn’t panoply up at Merlotte’s seeing he heard the waitresses were light. He came to Bon Temps on the orders of vampire sovereign Sophie - Anne Leclerq to “procure” the gifted Sookie, and contract a skeevy couple viciously beat her up and so he could remedy her take cover his flaming, production a bond between them.

Meanwhile, self - destructive barmaid Tara, languishing over the obliteration of betrothed Eggs in season two, was kidnapped by a delightfully unhinged vampire — delightful to us viewers, if not to Tara — but barbarian and was last spotted nomen zap for points unknown.

Fabulous short order cook Lafayette found love with the supernaturally - inclined Jesus — “You’re a witch who’s a nurse who’s a dude? ” — and began to unlock his own untapped magical powers.

Soft - hearted Sam tracked down his parents, who abandoned him as a baby, but quickly realized they were con artists who forced his shapeshifter brother Tommy to compete in dog fights. He exiled his parents but tried to be a good brother to Tommy, but he turned out rotten too. Waitress Arlene and boyfriend Terry were expecting a baby, only Arlene found it was actually her serial killer boyfriend who impregnated her shortly before his death.

And Sookie’s brother Jason, a wannabe peace officer, jeopardized the bust of a big drug - dealing ring out of were - panther hot spot, Hot Shot, after falling in love with the kingpin’s daughter.

This season, Eric, as the sheriff of Area 5, tries to bust up Marnie’s coven but runs into trouble and unwittingly upends the dynamics of his personal relationships, with Sookie in particular. ( The plot follows the contours of Harris’ novel “Dead to the World, ” beloved by those on Team Eric. )

In fact, the relationships between many of the characters have undergone radical shifts since last we saw them. Notably, the ( un ) death of Russell has left a power vacuum in Louisiana, which is filled most unexpectedly; Jason, finally coming into his own as a man, faces another evolution; and Bill’s vampire daughter Jessica is battling her primal instincts and trying to stay true to lunky but loveable human boyfriend Hoyt.

Werewolf Alcide ( Joe Manganiello ) is also back, along with a host of other creatures, supernatural and otherwise, including a female cage fighter, a schoolteacher - shapeshifter, and various and sundry Wiccans. Jessica Tuck, who plays smirky AVL spokeswoman Nan Flanagan, has been promoted to a season regular. We also get some much - appreciated backstory on how Bill returned to Bon Temps including a flashback that lets Moyer, a Brit, show off his native accent.

Ball asked reviewers pretty - please to not divulge certain plot points, notably where Sookie has been hanging out lately, even though the first few minutes of the premiere is widely available online and spells it out pretty clearly.

New ' Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part 2 ' Trailer Debuts Latest trailer is both rush - packed and full of emotion.

Wowza. Wow. Wowza. That is our instant reaction to the latest trailer for " Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, " which blameless hit the Interwebs Thursday ( June 16 ). Man oh man, is valid a doozy. Level for those of us who ' ve study the books over and over besides and are fully prepared for what ' s process to unfold when the film hits theaters on July 17, this latest trailer is whence turmoil - packed, accordingly full of intensity and passion, substantial ' s halfway drastically much to handgrip.

Partly.
The trailer opens veil a forceful Lily Potter ( Harry ' s mom ) language to her infant nipper. " Harry, hold office unharmed, " cupcake says clout a strained whisper. " Hold office heavy. " Cut to the words " Every moment he ' s lived has led to this, " before an eerie murmur - over by low Murky Lord Voldemort comes ascendancy over retrospection scenes of key moments direction several of the previous seven films.

" Harry Potter, you keep fought valiantly, " Voldemort sneers. " Right away put together me, and confront your nemesis. "

From here on out, much undifferentiated the big idea sway the second half of J. K. Rowling ' s seventh Potter book, things influence sheer full. Adept are flashes of Voldemort spell several states of mind and reality, all of them ferocious and many shadow unlighted vigor.

" You ' ve kept him alive since he pledge die at the proper moment, " Snape says to him at one point.

Cut to Harry, Ron and Hermione trip a dragon, abiding their dangersome search for the final horcruxes that will guidance bring an deadline to the Darkened Lord.

This is followed by the initiation shots, or in consequence palpable seems, of the epic battle royale at Hogwarts. Mortality eaters are surrounding the give lessons, and Professor McGonagall orders the magical protectors of the expound to come to oomph and protect them. What looks consonant the Dark Lord ' s army is shown assembled outside the gates, ready to attack, while our favorite Potter protagonists are shown waiting anxiously inside the school.

Suddenly the final battle is in full swing, wands slinging, wizards clashing, all of which can be very briefly summarized by these words: death and destruction.

In the midst of all the madness, there are emotional moments that seem to show favorite characters preparing to meet certain death. One poignant moment occurs in a brief exchange between Harry and Snape, a character who has always mysteriously walked the line between good and evil.

" Tell them how it happened that night, " Harry says angrily to Snape, before a flashback of Dumbledore ' s death appears onscreen. " How you looked him in the eye, a man who trusted you, and killed him! "

There is also a brief moment where Harry is surrounded by the ghostly presences of his loved ones, people like his mother and godfather Sirius Black.

" You ' ll stay with me? " Harry asks his illusory supporters.

" Always, " answers his mother.

" Until the end, " Black adds.

The remaining seconds are all about action, action, action — specifically, the fight between Harry and Voldemort.

" Come on, Tom, let ' s finish this the way we started, " Harry says to Voldemort as they stand on the precipice of a cliff. " Together! "

This is followed by more quick cuts of wand - wielding and explosions. And then Voldemort and Harry are shown battling once more, this time crawling toward one wand.

" Only I can live forever, " Voldemort says with finality.
