FAIRBANKS—Chalk up another win and a perfect start to the 2011 season for the Alaska Goldpanners, who beat the Anchorage Bucs in the second game of the three-game series Saturday, 8-3, to kick off their season an unbeaten 2-0.
The Panners put up a run first, in the first inning, but the Bucs had a solid second inning, scoring two and taking the lead. The Panners answered back, however, and scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the second.
The top of the Fairbanks order scored the team’s runs in the inning on hits from third baseman Kyle Geason, left fielder Chris Doyle and a sacrifice fly by first baseman Robbie Buller.
Buller and Geason went on to the lead the Panners offense, finishing with 3-for-4 and 3-for-5 performances, respectively. Buller scored two runs and had two RBI while Geason scored one and batted in three others.
“The middle of our order is showing to be real strong,” Panners manager Jim Dietz said of three and four hitters.
No. 2 hitter Trent Bridges is also proving himself a solid baseball player, scoring three runs and going 4 for 5.
The Bucs recorded another run in the top of the fourth to narrow the Panners’ lead to one, 4-3. Again, the Panners answered.
In the fifth, the home team scored two more runs on two walks by Anchorage’s pitcher Conner Kendrick, taking a 6-3 lead.
Making their win even more commanding, the Panners picked up two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Anchorage’s Ty Griffith took the mound. Bridges and Buller scored the runs.
Austin Pentecost started the game on the mound for the Panners, but after giving up eight walks, two hits and three runs in 3 1/3 innings, right fielder Chris Pfau stepped in.
Pfau went on to pitch five innings. He gave up one hit and no runs while managing seven strikeouts.
“I was just trying to throw strikes. That’s what the team needed,” the Missouri native said. “I knew I had my D behind me, so I just kept pounding the zone.”
Dietz said Pfau’s performance on the mound was the highlight of the game that lasted three hours and 15 minutes.
“It was nice to see Pfau get out of it,” Dietz said, adding that Pentecost seemed to be trying to hard during his stint at the 1 spot.
Mike Rivera pitched the final 2/3 of the ninth inning, giving up one hit and striking out two batters, to pick up the save for the Panners.
Both Dietz and Pfau said things looked better for the Panners than they did on Friday night when they managed a 4-3 win over the Bucs.
“We’re tired, sure,” Dietz said. “There’s that first-night excitement and then you’re flat. It’s a long process, but we hit the ball well tonight, and we’re looking more relaxed.”
“It was a well-played game,” Pfau added. “It was a good team win with many positives all around.”
Anchorage’s starting pitcher Matt Sims pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Bucs where he gave up seven hits and five runs.
He didn’t walk a single Panners batter and struck out four.
Davis Morgan led the Bucs, going 2 for 5 from the plate.
As a team, the Panners out-hit the Bucs, 12-4.
The teams face off in the final game of theirs series at 2 p.m. today at Growden Memorial Park.
